Trainer
The training partnership of Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman represents a powerful fusion of proven success and rising talent in Australian horse racing. Together, they have crafted a stable that balances tradition with innovation, pragmatism with passion, and experience with youthful ambition. Operating from their base at Pakenham in Victoria, the duo has quickly become one of the most compelling combinations in the sport, united by a shared philosophy of horsemanship, hard work, and elite performance.
Peter Moody is one of the most recognisable names in Australian racing. A Group 1-winning trainer with a career defined by success at the highest level, he is best known as the trainer of the legendary Black Caviar, the unbeaten mare who captivated a nation and redefined what dominance looked like on the racetrack. Moody’s natural horsemanship, straightforward communication, and strategic nous have earned him a place among the sport’s greats. After stepping away from training in 2016, he returned to the fold in 2020, refreshed, re-focused, and ready to re-establish his presence in the modern era.
His comeback was both timely and impactful, and in 2022, he officially partnered with Katherine Coleman, a gifted horsewoman who had already proven her value within Moody’s operation. Katherine brought a deep well of experience from years working in top stables, where she developed a sharp eye for detail, a calm temperament under pressure, and a strong understanding of horse management. Her transition to co-trainer marked a natural evolution, not just a professional promotion, but the acknowledgement of a rising star ready to step into the spotlight.
Coleman’s strengths lie in her hands-on approach, precision in horse care, and strong relationships with owners and staff. She is deeply involved in the day-to-day running of the stable, overseeing training regimens, managing equine wellbeing, and contributing to the stable’s long-term planning. Her influence has brought a fresh, energetic dynamic to the partnership, complementing Moody’s experience with a contemporary mindset and an exceptional work ethic.
Together, Moody and Coleman have formed a partnership built on mutual respect, open communication, and an unwavering focus on results. Their stable has produced high-quality performers across all levels, most notably Incentivise, the remarkable stayer who swept the Makybe Diva Stakes, Turnbull Stakes, and Caulfield Cup in a sensational 2021 campaign under Moody’s guidance. With Coleman now firmly entrenched as co-trainer, the team continues to build depth across both sprinting and staying ranks, developing a pipeline of horses that reflects their broad expertise and sharp placement.
Their training base at Pakenham offers access to world-class facilities, allowing them to maintain a boutique operation with an emphasis on individualised care, conditioning variety, and performance longevity. They are not a volume-based stable, but rather one that prizes quality and detail, ensuring that each horse receives the attention it needs to reach its full potential. In an industry that values both legacy and fresh perspective, Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman have struck the ideal balance. As they continue to develop top-tier talent and campaign successfully across Australia’s premier carnivals, their partnership is fast becoming one of the most admired in the sport, a true reflection of the past, present, and exciting future of Australian racing.
