Latest Update
24th March 2025
ANTHONY & SAM FREEDMAN WILL TRAIN THIS QUALITY COLT BY LEADING 3RD SEASON SIRE, HARRY ANGEL.
The Harry Angel colt arrived safely to Matt Vella’s stables in Hawkesbury on 24th March, ready to commence being broken in. This of course will be his first preparation towards his career ahead of becoming a racehorse. He is in outstanding hands with Matt who has broken in numerous Group 1 winners, including several Golden Slipper winners. Matt is one of the best in the business and the end product is a well-mannered and well-educated young horse.
The process of breaking in a horse is really to teach them how to wear saddle and gear, be mouthed, be ridden and to adapt to the rider’s instructions. The colt will also go through the barriers so he can familiarise himself with that important aspect of going to the races.
This new start to racing life can sometimes be a little stressful for a young horse but he is in good hands with Matt who will always put the colt’s well-being first. The breaking in process usually takes a few weeks, give or take, to complete and we will continue to update you on his progress each fortnight.
We are very much looking forward to our new partnership with Anthony & Sam Freedman which will be kicking off with this quality colt.
A Group 1 winner himself, Harry Angel produced 17 Stakes winners in his short time at stud to date, among them Group 1 winner, Tom Kitten and very exciting 3yo, the undefeated Private Harry, winner of the $3m Sunlight Classic.
This colt is a lovely, neat scopey yearling, a late foal but that’s why we got him so cheaply. He will catch up when he needs to and make a nice sprinter/miler. The boys will train him at their various stables including Flemington & Rosehill and $2,565 will get you 2.5% share – a very reasonable price considering how well his Sire is going..
Sire
HARRY ANGEL A Group 2 winning juvenile and dual Group 1 winning 3YO, crowned World Champion Sprinter and Timeform rated 132 – higher than all eight The Everest winners: Nature Strip (131), Classique Legend (128), Redzel (126), Yes Yes Yes (125), Giga Kick (124), Think About It (127).
After a top 4 finish as a Second Season Sire last Season, Harry Angel has gone to the next level this season sitting on top of the 3rd Season Table. He has produced quality racehorses in the Northern Hemisphere and his progeny are flying in the Southern Hemisphere. His Group 1 winner, TOM KITTEN got so close to securing another Group 1 when beaten narrowly behind Mr Brightside in the recent Futurity Stakes at Caulfield.
Group 2 winner, ANGEL CAPITAL was favourite for the Group 1 Australian Guineas until a raceday ailment forced his scratching. ARKANSAW KID is a Group 2 winner with 2 Listed wins and a restricted Listed win to his name.
Listed winner and Group 2 winner, STRETAN ANGEL also has a close-up 2nd in a Group 1 to her name. One of his most exciting sons, the undefeated PRIVATE HARRY is making waves taking out the $3m Sunlight in dominant fashion.
Dam
ALL OVER CASANOVA by Smart Missile was placed at 3 and is out of the Stakes winning mare, Vivid Vixen a winner up to 2004m. This is her 4th foal, her first 2 are unraced and this colt’s 2yo full sister Bella Angelica is trained by Tom Dabernig. She was 2nd in a recent trial but is yet to debut.
Trainer
Anthony Freedman – is the third eldest of racing’s famous Freedman brothers. He has been in integral part of the vast Freedman Racing operation since the mid-1980s.
After Anthony completed Year 12 at Canberra Grammar, he joined his brothers Lee and Richard, as an assistant, at Warwick Farm in 1983. He was part of the move to Melbourne, training out of Flemington, in 1984.
Lee held the licence, but the brothers worked as a team. A few years later, youngest brother, Michael, join the team.
Late in 1992, Anthony pioneered the Freedman brothers’ first foray interstate, when he opened a stable at Randwick. In that first year in Sydney, Anthony (under Lee’s licence) prepared Bint Marscay to win the 1993 Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill.
Anthony, who has a keen eye for a yearling, is heavily involved in the yearling sale inspection process. It was Anthony who selected and bought Naturalism as a yearling for only $35,000. And he also selected Mummify ($60,000) and True Glo ($40,000) out of the Adelaide Sales.
When Freedman’s moved to Markdel, Anthony worked in partnership with Lee – specialising in the development of the two-year-olds – until Lee decided to hand in his licence in August 2011. Freedman Racing had produced 124 Group 1 winners, starting with Miss Clipper, who won the first in 1986. The record included five Melbourne Cups, four Caulfield Cups, four Golden Slippers, two Cox Plates, eight Derbys, 11 Oaks, three Newmarket Handicaps and seven Victorian Metropolitan Trainer’s Premierships.
Anthony has been head trainer since the start of the 2011-2012 season, and almost gave the brothers their sixth Melbourne Cup winner when Lucas Cranach finished a game third in the 2011 Melbourne Cup behind Dunaden.
Anthony trained his first official Group 1 winner when Mawingo won the 2012 Doomben Cup at Doomben, in Brisbane, on May 19. He finished his first season as trainer at Markdel with the impressive record of 40 city winners (49 provincial), four Group wins and eight Listed wins at the healthy strike rate of 15.6 per cent.
Anthony formed Anthony Freedman Racing at the start of the 2012-2013 racing season and since then has trained over 400 winners.
Anthony was re-joined by Lee in partnership in 2014 for four seasons before Lee departed for Singapore.
Sam Freedman – is the youngest son of Anthony. He has grown up around the stable and has a strong passion for the horse racing industry. After completing his secondary and tertiary education, Sam travelled to England to play cricket. During his time overseas, Sam spent two years working for leading European trainer Roger Varian as his pupil assistant. At Varians, Sam was fortunate enough to work closely with leading international galloper Postponed as well as other Group 1 winners Belardo, Ajman Princess, Sheikha Reika and Ajman Princess.
Sam returned to Australia in October 2017 to re-join his father’s stable bringing with a wealth of knowledge from his time overseas and an eagerness to continue building on what he has learnt. Sam brings fresh ideas to the business as well as enthusiasm to build on the success of the stable.
Sam joined his father in a training partnership at the beginning of the 2020-21 racing season and celebrated his first winner at Sale on August 13 with Criminal..
