Global Experience, Local Success

With a career that spans continents and a surname synonymous with excellence in Australian racing, Michael Freedman has forged his own remarkable path in the thoroughbred industry. A trainer of Group 1 winners both at home and abroad, Freedman blends international perspective with an intuitive, horse-first approach—establishing himself as a quietly confident and highly respected figure in the Australian training ranks. Operating from his base at Randwick in Sydney, he is known for his professionalism, precision, and an ability to consistently deliver on racing’s biggest stages.

A member of the famed Freedman racing dynasty, Michael grew up immersed in the sport, learning alongside his brothers—Lee, Richard, Anthony, and Laurie—who together dominated Australian racing through the 1990s and early 2000s. However, rather than merely follow the family blueprint, Michael took a bold step and charted his own course. After years working behind the scenes and gaining hands-on experience, he was granted his trainer’s licence in the early 2000s and quickly began assembling a reputation as a sharp horseman with a cool head and a long-term vision.

In 2008, Michael embarked on a transformative chapter, relocating to Singapore where he established himself as one of the top trainers at Kranji. His time in Asia yielded outstanding results, including Group 1 victories with horses like Super Easy, Mr Big, and Better Life. Freedman’s success in Singapore solidified his status as a world-class trainer, one capable of adapting to different environments and managing horses across diverse conditions and racing systems. His global experience would later become a major asset upon his return to Australia.

After a brief stint training in partnership with his brother Lee, Michael re-established his solo operation in New South Wales, where he has since built a boutique yet highly competitive stable. Based out of Randwick, his setup allows for hands-on involvement and precise programming—an approach that has proven highly effective in nurturing both early-season two-year-olds and top-tier older horses. His methods emphasize individualised care, strategic placement, and building confidence in horses over time—principles that align with his
