OUR EYES ARE ON THE VRC OAKS IN 2025

THIS FILLY HAS THE LOOKS AND THE PEDIGREE

This filly by DUNDEEL who needs no introduction, had a recent winner in the Group 1 Doncaster, namely CELESTIAL LEGEND. The filly has an international staying pedigree with Group winners across the page and has the looks to match. She will get over ground eventually, but she is racy enough to suggest we could get to see her at the races as a late 2yo / early 3yo. Especially with eyes on a race like the VRC Oaks in 2025.

This filly is bred on the exact same cross as SUPER SETH. When you look at this majestic filly’s pedigree and see all the Black Type, you get the feeling that if she were to win the right race or two, her value as a broodmare after racing will be significant.

She is heading to Australia’s leading Trainer, Ciaron Maher who personally had her on his short list to purchase for himself but was more than happy to let us syndicate it for him.

Purchased from the proven Inglis Easter Sale, the filly is a compact athletic type, big hindquarter on her and a lot of power behind the engine there. Ciaron Maher loves this filly and it’s always good when a trainer loves what they’re going to be training. Great value at the price.

The Sire: DUNDEEL

The Champion 3YO, the six-time Group 1 winner & weight-for-age superstar of Australia. Now one of Australia’s leading sires with 8 Group 1 winners, including Castelvecchio, Militarize and 2024 Randwick Guineas winner Celestial Legend.

Dundeel started his racing career with five straight wins culminating in the 2012 Spring Champion Stakes. He had previously added to his unbeaten record with another win in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) also at Randwick in Sydney.

In the autumn of 2013 he became the first horse to win the coveted Australian Triple Crown since Octagonal in 1996. He won the first leg in the 2013 Randwick Guineas (1600m). This victory was followed up by a comfortable 6.8 length win in the 2013 Rosehill Guineas (2000m). He completed the Australian Triple Crown in style with a 6 length win in the Australian Derby (2400m) and in doing so he also became the first ever to do so since the first leg moved from the Canterbury Guineas in 2006. He also becomes the first horse to win a clean sweep of the four major Group 1 three-year-old races run in Sydney, having previously won the 2012 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m), an Australian Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds at Set Weights, raced at the Randwick Racecourse, Sydney with prize money of A$400,000. His fantastic three-year-old season was recognised in receiving the 2013 NSW Champion Horse of the Year.[9]

Dundeel continued to develop as a four-year-old and created history in becoming the first horse to beat the previously unbeaten Atlantic Jewel in the Group 1 2013 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield in Melbourne and then proceeded to win the richest race to ever be run on a Sydney track in the $4M Queen Elizabeth Stakes.[10] In reflecting on It’s a Dundeel’s career, his trainer Murray Baker and champion jockey James McDonald,[12] who has partnered him in all but one start, both describe Dundeel as the best horse they have ever trained and ridden respectively. Mick Kent, trainer of the Australian Derby runner-up Philippi, described Dundeel as “the best horse in Australia – as good as the mare (Black Caviar)”. Black Caviar’s breeder Rick Jamieson has described Dundeel as a champion and “the best three-year-old we have seen for a while.

The Dam: DAROUSHA

The Dam, DAROUSHA is by REDOUTE’S CHOICE. This is her third foal. Her second foal is a 2yo, dam of 1 foal to race. DAROUSHA was unraced and is a half-sister to DARIYAN (Champion Older horse in France in 2016), DARKANIYA (Group 1 Winner), DEVAMANI, DARIYZA and DARABAD all Group winners & listed placings.

Trainer: CIARON MAHER

Ciaron Maher took his first tentative steps in racing as a teenager, working with a trainer after school each day. He was an apprentice jockey with Peter Hayes in Adelaide and Melbourne before becoming an accomplished jumps jockey, competing in Australia versus Ireland jockey challenges and riding in England, Ireland and Dubai.

In 2005 he established himself as a trainer in Warrnambool, home of jumps racing. His first winner was Spectacular Storm in a hurdle race at Terang, followed up smartly by another win at Sandown. The stage was set for a successful career not only in jumps racing, but also on the flat as the stable grew. Ciaron Maher has since moved to Caulfield, where he has expansive stables on the course. He has retained facilities in Warrnambool, which suit horses in need of a country setting, and has secured new premises at Randwick. At his property in Pakenham, on the edge of Melbourne’s suburbs, he has agistment and pre-training facilities.

A young trainer with an eye for picking winning prospects at yearling sales, he has built a stable of loyal owners as well as successful horses. He welcomes first-time owners as well as experienced racing hands. He is regarded as hard-working, thoughtful and, above all, patient. His promise is that every horse will be given every chance to develop its full potential.

Ciaron Maher discovered the thrill of Group 1 success in 2007 with TEARS I CRY winning the VRC Emirates stakes at Flemington.

Black type races have flowed since then, SRIKANDI winning the Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap and the Group 1 Sky Racing Tatts Club Tiara, SET SQUARE winning the Group 1 Crown Oaks, and the following year, JAMEKA winning the Group 1 Crown Oaks including the Group 1 BMW Stakes and the Group 1 Caulfield Cup not forgetting LOVING GABY (by I Am Invincible) winning the Group 1 William Reid Stakes in 2020.
